You could try drilling a 1/8" hole through the carbon skin that is aligned
obliquely across the internal ribs.  Then substitute a proper length of high
quality piano wire (such as you have in your piano hinges) in your drill
chuck.  It should go through the prepreg panels and track pretty well.
