Aircraft alternators use special brushes which are made of a harder carbon
compound than automotive brushes. I once had to replace brushes in an
alternator which had only about 300 hours in a Cessna 172. It had been
overhauled by the local tractor service company in Santa Maria, CA (by the
sticker on it). The brushes were gone and the unit was full of carbon dust.
Please, for your own health, do not use an automotive unit in your aircraft!
Brushes are available for the common Ford and Chrysler units used in
aircraft from Pfiffer but they won't sell them to private parties, you must
be an overhaul facility. I'm lucky to have some om the shelf.
Electrosystems of Fort Deposit, AL may be able to supply standard types.
Locking tabs for the thru bolts are also available. I'm not aware of any
other differences save inspection, records and price.
