I attended the Legacy builder workshop during the first week of December.
A good workshop overall....however, there was one major oversight. When we
closed the horizontal stabilizer and elevators, we did not drill the
required 1/4" vent holes in the ribs. I called Lancair for technical
assistance, and Don Goetz said "it really wasn't important-----just
something copied over from the IV/IVP" construction manual."
Well, now that I realize just how tightly sealed these assemblies are, I
don't think I agree. While climbing from sea level to FL180 a great deal
of expansion will occur, with the very real potential for component
failure.
So, experienced builders, please help me out. Do I need to buy a 4-foot
drill bit to drill through these ribs from each end of the stabilizer? Or
will a 1-foot drill work by drilling through the rear beam into the front
spar? The elevators may be a little trickier!
