Alternator,
You do not need a certified alternator. These planes are experimental. I
have a 60 amp Mitsubishi alternator modified to remove the regulator
circuitry and use an external B&C regulator. The alternator is small. You
could use it stock from a rebuilt shop. State it is for an off road vehicle
and not an airplane. This way you are not lying and it does not run on
roads. No need to complicate the issue or strike fear in the repairman that
you would put it into an airplane with all that liability stuff.

I have a Ford 60 amp alternator on my Lycoming O-320 which is a VERY big
alternator. The back end of the alternator contacts the heat muff located
on the number 1 cylinder exhaust stack. I would like to substitute a
smaller alternator. Has anyone run into this problem? What smaller
alternators are available ?
ACS carries a Chrysler alternator. Is anyone using this alternator? Is it
considerably smaller than the Ford alternator?
I would rather not use the B&C alternator since I need the extra weight
forward and would rather not spend the extra money for the lightweight
alternator.
Some friends have mentioned the Nippon or Mitsubishi alternators are
smaller. Are these certified? If so, were can I order one?
