As a builder you have intimate knowledge of your aircraft and will undoubtably take greater interest and care in its construction than anyone else. As an A&P-IA I have a different perspective than the average builder. True I have training, but I also have the opportunity to see a broad range problems that occur on a variety of aircraft (usually certificated ones) and be exposed to information that you may not be. My post was an effort to invite caution. Often times what appears to be an innocuous alteration in design or fabrication may in fact be more hazardous than imagined. Can you improve on whatever Lancair suggests? Sure quite possibly, there is always room for improvement, but remember too that for every “improvement” there can be unforeseen results or even consequences. I am not suggesting that the manufacturer, or more accurately in this case the kit manufacturer, is always right. I’ve seen more than one case of failure of a given design to meet it’s goals in certificated aircraft. I’ve also seen where the design was adequate but the construction or assembly technique was not. Either way the result was a reduction in safety or service life or both. I take to heart the old adage, “Learn from the mistakes of others, you won’t live long enough to make them all yourself”.
