Ron and Others:
I don't believe that failure of the flaps to retract is much of a problem in
these Lancairs. First, after these many years of the LNN and the Lancair List,
we haven't read much about a complete failure of the flaps to retract under
normal flight conditions. Second, these airplanes are so powerful (HP to weight
ratio) that they easily climb with both the gear and flaps extended (though I
don't know that this would be so at high altitudes). In fact, a friend of mine
regularly does touch and go landing practice with full flaps and gear extended
and his plane climbs quickly doing so-- and even more quickly when either of the
two are retracted. Third, more complexity in wiring may introduce new failure
modes.
I believe the falure of the flaps to retract may be caused by having the cutoff
switches too far apart. Try shortening the travel of the flaps by one half inch
on each end (by resetting the cutoff switches) and then see if the flaps still
freeze. Greg Nelson
