Gary,
This option may give you enough clearance.  It did for me.  Replace the current
screw and lock nut with a shorter screw and a plain nut or use a Dremel cut-off
wheel to remove the locking feature of the nut and extra screw length.  Then add
some flox around the nut and glass over with 1 BID as a very low profile locking
feature.  These screws are permanent and will never be removed.
