I too think Brent is smarter than the average tree stump, but on the issue
of Autogas in 80 octane engines, possibly 70 percent of all non-turboed
recip aviation engines, 100LL is not the best choice. There is an FAA
advisory Circular from the late 70's which warns of the problems with
burning 100LL in 80 octane engines mostly from lead fouling.  It outlines
special procedures and frequent inspections for use of this "alternative
fuel".

I lead the fight to get approved and tested autogas on the field here in
Madison, WI and with 12 years of experience in my PA-28-235 our maintenance
costs from stuck valves, hot spots burning up exhausts, and led fouled
plugs
virtually disappeared.  I finally sold the airplane with 2200 SMOH and
going
strong with great compression on all cyl's.  I added small amounts of
Marvel
Mystery Oil to the gas and crank oil as well.

Oh yes, the money I saved just in gas was the single biggest reduction in
my
operating costs, almost 20%, at a dollar less per gallon including the tax
rebate for off road use of the fuel.  Add the savings in maintenance...

Now if we could just kill all the attorneys and lets say just 40 of the 42
government bureaucrats per airplane flying, we could all afford to fly
safer
airplanes with modern engines and the right fuel for the design.

Indecently, take the 235 and the Lancair IV side by side, almost
identically
configured airplanes, one just goes almost twice the speed,  thanks Lance.

Stu.
