After a lengthy discussion with ERic on the phone a few days ago, he has
promised to get more info and re-address the LOP operation of the "Lean Burn"
cross flow head designed engines.  I told him where at least one chart is
that clearly shows that LOP operations are designed into the engine.  He will
get back into the books and clarify his point soon, I hope.
Bob Minnis, the engineer who is in my opinion the most knowledgeale on it's
operation reminded me that the TSIO-550 is nothing more than a pumped up TSIO
520, and that ALL  of the cruise performance for it in the Original Malibu
were for LOP, none on the rich side at all.
A similar engine, the TSIO-360-MB in the current Piper Seneca V, specifies
leaning to PEAK...

Keep in mind when talking to self professed experts on LOP operations, we are
only speaking about this type of 550, not the previous models with updraught
induction.  The updraught engine had a horrible airflow imbalance, and the
GAMI injectors did absolute wonders for it's operation, and GAMI is the one
that recommends or at least says you can run these engine LOP which is not
recommended by TCM.  OBTW, TCM now sells matched injectors (like GAMI) for
about 1/2 the price.

As Paul Harvey says, stand bye for the rest of the story.

Mike
