I just returned from the builders workshop (I'm building a LIVP) and thought
sharing my experience might to helpful to others.

I found my workshop extremely beneficial and I recommend it to everyone.  My
experience with composites is very limited (restoring a Corvette years ago)
so I was nervous about my project.  Having completed the workshop I now have
a better understanding of the magnitude of my undertaking, however I feel I
have a certain level of confidence that I did not have before.  As with most
builders I left the program with my wings, ailerons, flaps, horizontal
stabilizer and elevator structurally complete essentially.  I tend to be a
perfectionist, trying to remove every unnecessary gram from the project, so
we had to stay late on Friday for the final wing closing.  I did not get one
complaint from anyone.  Just jokes like "we just squeezed out another
milla-knot for you Joe".  Two more guys did join in around 3:00 pm Friday;
something we all appreciated.  Nothing was done FOR me, I was assisted, and
together each task was completed.  I have aches and pains in places I did
not know existed.

There was one other  builder (customer as they call us) building a Legacy
along with a his friend another "Legacy depositor"  This customer is an
engineer for Boeing in Seattle.  I found it interesting (and comforting)
that after many months of analysis he chose a Lancair for his project.  We
had many discussions and it seemed to me he was no less enthusiastic with
his choice after the workshop was completed.  His wings were closed in about
three and a half days and they began working on the fuselage the last two.
By the way, two of the 7 or 8 Mexican navy trainers were in the shop with us
under construction (both IVP's) by a joint Mexican/Lancair construction
crew.   I spoke to one of the Mexican pilots - a captain,.  He said they
chose Lancair because they could not find the performance and quality and
twice the cost.

Everyone (and I mean everyone) helped me feel welcome.  I felt they truly
enjoyed discussing my project with me.  I was encouraged to meet every
responsible Lancair person involved with my project (from avionics to
crating) and got useful information from each. I honestly believe my
experience is one that will stay with me for quite some time.

I elected to purchase several options but to keep from boring those not
interested I will sent separate messages about what I saw regarding the new
door (new quality control), fastbuild engines, (especially cooling issues),
fastbuild firewalls, Sierra system (oh baby!), etc...

Regards,
Joe Trepicone (LIVP)
