As one of the instructors of the Lancair workshop, I feel compelled to
comment briefly on how a builder or potential builder might benefit from our
course.

First of all, the curriculum and workshop projects have been revamped
somewhat to more accurately reflect the processes we use in the construction
of our Lancairs.

We focus briefly on all aspects of the build process from
tool selection/shop set-up through the initial test flight. Emphasis is
placed on safety, pertinent FAR's and how they relate to Experimentals,
inventory and storage of kit parts and components, organization of the build
process into an efficient and timely manner, basic composite skills, A&P
type
standards necessary for safe construction, and basic finishing skills. As
much as possible, considering we are dealing with multiple skill/knowledge
levels and 4 different Lancair kits, we try to include specific tips and
information that each participant can use when they get home.

I have assisted multiple builders over the years, many in their own shop
settings, and have found that the most important thing we can offer-either
one
on one or in a group environment- is simply looking over the shoulder of
builders as they do simple tasks such as a wet lay-up or assembling nose
gear linkage or trying to sand an aileron so it looks nice when painted.

Admittedly, a builder 70% complete will not get as much out of the workshop
as someone just starting or a prospective purchaser; but if one potential
unsafe condition can be caught early, one mistake prevented,or if the
learning curve can be accelerated for $350 bucks, isn't that a small price
to pay?
