I realize that this is a mute point since there are no 96 octane fuels ailable but this knowledge does trim the spread in octanes required versus available at the auto gas pump. When and if the high octane fuel crunch hits, my plan was to simply put shorter pistons (lower compression) in my IO-360 and accept the resultant lower HP. The cruise speed change will not be that significant due to the cube root relationship between delta HP and delta IAS. In other words, a small reduction in HP has an even smaller effect on cruise IAS. I'm simply not loosing sleep over this issue and am confidant that a reasonable solution will become available. This issue does point up another advantage to flying experimentals. We will be able to deal with the issue without the governments' help when and if required to do so! Any of you experts care to comment on the shorter piston idea? Short and free is a good thing.
