I successfully used Exxon Premium in Texas for several years in a 90hp Alon
Aircoupe. On moving to Calif. I continued to use it until I thought I
noticed less power on the first takeoff of the day. Checked all the usual
things and finally, thru elimination, found the carburetor had to be warmed
to operating temp before it would atomize the auto fuel completely.
The spec for avgas has a narrow distillation range compared to auto fuel.
When you get avgas on your hands it evaporates quickly, auto fuel will leave
a oily residue and take much longer to completely evaporate. Auto fuel is
false economy at best and a risky scheme as a long term avgas substitute.
