Rob,

Bummer.

Grinding down the bolt head (and rounding it) is a possibility because= of=20 its use in shear - as long as it cannot ever catch on GM4 - especially when= the=20 gear comes down.

You could revert to the screen door springs (GM10) and rid yourself of= the=20 rat-trap springs and the washers you used to make that work.

Scott=20 & Aaron,

You=20 guys got me thinking around this problem a lot more. So I took some more= =20 measurements, and now think I have worked out what is wrong. It appears t= he=20 original builder placed the rear face of the  GM 13 about =C2=BC=E2= =80=9D further back=20 than the rear face of GM 12. (This is a very early kit. I think later kit= s=20 came with the GM 13 already installed, if I understand correctly). This h= as=20 resulted in the gear leg and the GM 4 not being parallel when the gear le= g is=20 in the wheel well.

The=20 solution is not going to be easy however. Firstly because I have already= =20 incorporated the support brace for the GM 13 between it and the upper spa= r=20 cap, and secondly because even if I fix that problem, the rear face of th= e GM=20 12 would need to be set at a slightly different angle (in relation to the= =20 lateral axis of the aircraft) to take up the new alignment of the GM 4. A= s it=20 is , the AN4-13A bolts which bolt the GM 12 to the GM 4 are only just lon= g=20 enough, and the top ones which have to be placed with the heads to the fr= ont=20 only just fit into the space between the spar web and the front face of= =20 the  GM 12 when installing them. So installing longer bolts appears= =20 impossible. Thus I can=E2=80=99t simply build up the rear face of GM 12 w= ith a couple=20 more BID to correct the misalignment. The only other option I can see wou= ld be=20 to grind away the 2 bid and =C2=BD=E2=80=9D phenolic which make up the GM= 12, to the=20 correct angle, and then re-apply 2 bid over that. Given the significance = of=20 this structure to the integrity of the whole undercarriage, I am not sure= this=20 is an acceptable solution.

As=20 I said earlier, I don=E2=80=99t have any engineering qualifications, so I= am only=20 guessing at the structural issues all of this raises. I know that the sim= plest=20 solution is to grind the bolt heads down, but I am again only guessing wh= ether=20 this would compromise anything that really matters.

Ah,=20 the joys of home building!

Thanks=20 guys for your support.
