I came up with the idea of mounting an ignition capacitor across the relay.
It's cheap, has great mounting lugs and terminals and does an adequate job
of snubbing the back EMF from the coil.
I think this is a good idea. It is not ideal, but maybe ideal is
impractical and unobtainable. Some may say that this will cause the
ignition switch to burn out faster. It probably won't burn out that much
faster. The wires are long and the capacitance is small. Sometimes a good
mechanically sound solution like this is better than the ideal electrically
correct solution. Especially if the electrically correct solution can not
be made mechanically sound very easily. Ignition switches have big
contacts. I tried to find some diodes that terminate with braided wire and
ring terminals like an ignition capacitor and had no luck. If anyone else
finds this, please let us know.
