Are you talking about damage to the pipes or to the composite work?
Do you have the Mae West lower cowl PLUS the exhaust tunnel extenders? I do and measured temps from the firewall to the end of the extenders. I didn't find anything over 150 dF. I do think the extenders create more (too much?) flow, however.

I had similar damage on our IV. It was caused, as I believe yours is, from the exhaust pipe being too close to the belly and not from fuel in the exhaust burning. After repair and repaint, I ordered a 45 degree turn down and that completely solved the problem. It has the added benefit of reducing the amount of soot on the belly.
