I had similar damage on our IV. It was caused, as I believe yours is, from the exhaust pipe being too close to the belly and not from fuel in the exhaust burning. After repair and repaint, I ordered a 45 degree turn down and that completely solved the problem. It has the added benefit of reducing the amount of soot on the belly.
