Hello Marv:
When selecting a voltage for your varistor there are two requirements; it must
be higher than any anticipated "normal" voltage and lower than voltage
required to arc across the opening contacts of the switch controlling the
solenoid.
Jim used 18 volt rated MOVs in his 12-volt system and that would be the lowest
I would use. 14 volts is definitely too low as a 12 volt system regularly
regulates up to 14.6 volts to charge the battery. BTW although MOVs have very
high current capacity they can only absorb a limited amount of power. Exceed
that limit and the result is a loud "failure report". New DigiKey #P7315-ND
