Hi All,
I just returned from the APS course in Ada, OK. I thought it was a very worthwhile course. They start out by telling you that all the information provided in the course is based on real, repeatable data rather than old wives tales.
They covered items such as engine management, how to interpret your engine monitor, the visual differences between good/bad valves, cylinders, etc.
As best as I can tell there is no problem running your engine LOP at *high* power settings. Basically, you either run it ROP (125F+ ROP) or 50+ LOP... Don't run it in between. If you're running at 60% or less power, you can sweep your mixture from rich to lean and not damage your engine.
Anyhow, its probably the best $1000 I spent in aviation. If you're flying LOP (like I was) based on info you learned from others... this course will teach you whats actually happening and will make you feel at ease next time you pull the mixture back.
