When I did the high-power LOP check first time in the Legacy, I was looking to diagnose a problem.  Each mag "off" produced a fair amount of roughness.   Short version: changed out all 12 high-ohm champions for incredibly cheap and efficient BG341 plugs.  When performing the test the second time, I could not feel the mag being shut down--night and day difference.  EGTS all rose nicely and the cabin was smooth.  Running LOP now I can easily lean out until power just drops off without the prior roughness.  The big pull is a non-event except for FF and temps.    In my case Champion plugs were the culprit, a cheap fix.

Colin:

1) the prop governor should hold the RPM steady.  No change is the norm.

2) All EGTs should rise and stay steady if you are getting a good in-flight mag check.  If a plug is weak, that EGT will not be steady or it may fall completely off.

We recommend doing high power LOP mag checks on every flight.
