This might sound pretty basic, but instead of all these fancy switches and goofy reminders how about just a simple walk around the airplane as your last thing before you get in it.
Nobody is immune to forgetting things. At our company after we load the passengers and bags is required that both pilots do a full quick walk around airplane. The only things we are looking for are open doors, unhooked nose gear steering linkages ,chocks, covers, and carpets.
I never get in an airplane no matter how short I was out of it without first walking up to the boarding door and then doing a full 360 around the airplane before I get in.
