I've got a simple (and free) procedure that I use (for towbars, et al).

I NEVER get in my Lancair without walking a full circle around the plane.  It takes literally 15 seconds.  Not a preflight, just a quick circle with my eyes open.

If you are using the 2-part Lancair tow bar, put your ignition key on the ring with the pin that holds both parts together.  You will know where the tow bar is when you go to start the plane's engine.

{We installed brackets for the tow bar just behind the baggage compartment door on Ted Noel's IVP and installed a switch on one of them that turns on an annunciator when the two bar isn't properly stowed.  Works great.  <Marv>]
