Thanks to John and Neil for their timely replies regarding my semiconductor
questions.  I must say that all of the manufacurers' sites (Fairchild,
Harris, National) that I visited had plenty of online information in the
form of .pdf's that I've saved off to disk, so now I feel a little better
about trying my hand at building these circuits.   On my way to RS for
whatever electronics primer they might have on hand.  BTW, there was
another electronics project that I found long ago in the pages of Sport
Aviation (12/93 p.76) which detailed the building of an electronic position
indicator that made it possible to use a 10- or 20-LED array for flap or
trim position.  I had some conversations with the circuit's designer way
back when and have lots of notes regarding that circuit in a file around
here someplace... I'd be happy to make it available via email to anyone who
wants it.  The file is still archived in the AVSIG homebuilders' library on
Compuserve for those of you who have access.

In case you were wondering, buying electronic parts via the web from Mouser
was a somewhat frustrating experience, as their shopping cart system has
some holes in its logic and makes the en masse ordering process kind of
difficult if you happen to choose an out-of-stock or improper part number.
The one-item-at-a-time system works just fine if you're willing to discount
the frequent JAVA errors.  Use the phone and their 800 number, your hair
will last longer.
