I should clarify that the Harbor Freight infrared thermometer I linked to in my previous email has a maximum reading of 968 deg F, so you don't want to try it with a hotter EGT than that.  However, since I recommended doing this on a ground run-up, I wouldn't think you'd be anywhere near that hot.
