Several weeks ago I joined the Lancair Mail List, vol. 1, no. 168 and
soon requested information on alternative engines. Rumor had it that
someone was having Eggenfellner Aircraft (OSH '98) installing a Subaru
in a Lancair 235. Well, as rumor would have it, it wassn't quite the
case but close. Ridge Dickey of Ft. Worth (the red-neck side of DFW)
has contracted Jan Eggenfellner to design and install a 2.2L, sgl turbo
(intercooled) for his L-360. The twin turbo went by the way-side as
not developing enough ponies at altitude. The 2.2L is a single OHC
version allowing normal operation up to 18K-24K feet. Expected hp at
T/O is 245hp, 220 hp climbout (5-7 mins), and constant 160hp up to
cruising altitude.
The 2.5L non-turbo version is rated at 165hp for the dual OHC. Geared
reduction is 1.82:1. Fuel consumption is 8.0/hr cruise. Price is very
reasonable at $8,900 (2.2L) to $9,900 (2.5L). Firewall fwd pkgs avail-
able at $10,900 (2.2L) and $11,900 (2.5L). TBO expected to be 2000 hrs.
The 2.5L weighs 320 lbs. The 2.2L produces 135hp, wgt: chk web-site.
The 2.2L Turbo is mounted forward, not using a prop extension. Coolant
radiators and intercooler are mounted between engine & firewall. Fwd
C/G of engine helps to counter the added tail weight & ventral fin.
Full details and pictures of L-360 installation are available at:
eggenfellneraircraft.com. Mr. Dickey expects to be flying by OSH '99.
I have encouraged him to join the lancair.list for his benefit (& ours).
Having bought a Lyc O-235-C2 (108hp) and reading all the horror stories
of underpowered T/O's, naturally I'm looking for an economical reliable
powerplant to get the most use once up and flyin'. For sale: one O-235-
C2, chrome cylinders, 900 SMOH, call 714/821-5330.
Still pursuing other engines but this seems most logical (right Mr.
Spock).
