While waiting for my kit to arrive back in '95, started work on the instrument
panel, in particular the primary flight instrument lighting. I was opposed to
spending $100 per instrument, but also wanted to avoid postlights as much as
possible. After a few iterations, I came up with the following. The 6 flight
instruments are mounted to a bare aluminum panel that is suspended 1/4 in.
behind the primary instrument panel face. I use 5 Radio Shack panel lights
mounted to the rear panel to illuminate the space between the two panels. The
result is a nice glow across all of the instrument faces. I use 12V bulbs and
run them through a variable voltage regulator with a potentiometer for adjusting
intensity. The bulbs are removable from the rear. The whole set up only cost
about $30 and works incredibly well.
