Colyn,
I was against them before I was for them.
I have an old style Cessna gascolator with the ability to
remotely drain/back-flush it from a knob/cable placed near the oil dip
stick access door. Let's see, there are finger filters in the
aux tanks (wings) and the header tank (main) that will
feed the engine through the gascolator and then the even finer
filter in the Bendix style injection system throttle body (although, one could
consider the injector itself is the final filter). When I slow built,
sealed and closed my wings and header, I was very careful to keep everything
clean - i.e. no flushing required..
16 years with no problems.
I do not like the type of gascolators that one must reach down under
it to drain some fuel.

PS the red circled areas are the remote knob, the gascolator and its
drain tube.

creep here so I'll change the subject.
Does anyone care to argue for or against gascolators in general?
