I sent Marv the photos of the long range tank for John Forker's journey
from New Zealand to California so he can post them elsewhere on the
site.  John is in the final stages of building and testing a battery
powered capacitive fuel gage that will sit in the top of the tank with a
digital readout.  Capacity is 74.8 gallons which provides adequate range
if the power is reduced somewhat to yield a 15 gallon per hour fuel burn
with the Lycoming  TSIO 540.  Computed speed at that fuel burn is 260
knots at 27,000 feet.  Total fuel on board will be about 180 gallons.

The design and build time was a bit over 60 hours including all the
special carbon clevis parts and such that permits the unit to be shipped
flat and easily assembled in the cockpit.   The assembly is designed for
10 g forward impact load with a 2 to 1 safety factor (10,000 pound limit
load on the restraining straps anchored to rear seat belt anchors). The
bladder cost was about $1600 and the prepreg panels, hardware, and such
added about another $400.

When we have more time we will document the design and make the
information available for others to use.  The design can be modified to
provide up to 125 gallons, but one will need to be careful with aft CG
constraints with such large quantities.  John selected 75 gallons
because it keeps this particular airplane within the CG envelope with
the fuselage tank brim full.
