Couldn't agree with you more re: lock washers. Unfortunately, every Lycoming
(and probably Continental, too) uses the things everywhere. In particular,
the case bolts and the bolts that attach the sump all have a flat washer
against the aluminum followed by a split washer, and then a plain nut.
We, in the experimental world, can get rid of these as long as we reproduce
the correct clamping force with a lock-nut - but what about the poor souls
flying behind a Lycoming in a certificated spam can? Or further, a Lancair
driver who must rely on his local FAA certified wrench for engine
maintenance?
These guys (and gals) are just stuck, I guess. Are they to worry?
