Unfortunately, every Lycoming (and probably Continental, too) uses the things everywhere. In particular, the case bolts and the bolts that attach the sump all have a flat washer against the aluminum followed by a split washer, and then a plain nut. We, in the experimental world, can get rid of these as long as we reproduce the correct clamping force with a lock-nut - but what about the poor souls flying behind a Lycoming in a certificated spam can? Or further, a Lancair driver who must rely on his local FAA certified wrench for engine maintenance? These guys (and gals) are just stuck, I guess. Are they to worry?
