Continental's (David Martin) says that Hoppe's number nine is not a good fuel nozzle cleaner because it is removing material and can alter jet size. They recommend acetone/MEK etc. etc.. Also I learned that the jet inside the nozzle is a separate piece and if air pressure is applied to the engine side--the jet may be blown out the inner side--so be careful how you clean them.
Continental is trying to improve its fuel system by matching all the components of the system. I also learned that the manifold valve does have a metering function. It is done by controlling the spring tension.
I just attended their advanced maintenance technician course and found it to be excellent. Too bad they don't give samples.

Subject: [LML] Re: Fuel injector cleaning

I just wanted to follow up on this old note of mine.  I had an inspection done by a local shop in May 2011 and therefore did not think the plugs would be a high probability item.  I've had hard starting and idle problems all summer.  When a plug stopped firing yesterday I pulled all of them and the gaps were set to something less than 0.010 on 10/12 plugs.  There were some balls of (lead?) deep into some of the plugs, whitish deposits on the insides and some of the gaps were shorted of course.    These are massives, RHB32E on the IO-550N.  These plugs had about 70 hours since the "condition inspection".  I forgot to check the resistance that one owner wrote about but I did test them under pressure and all fired properly after cleaning.

As suggested here, I did not go after the injectors.
