Hello all -

I don't know if this will be of use to anyone, but I just wanted to pass along my iPad thoughts.

First, I'm not an Apple fan.  I tried almost every possible solution before arriving at the iPad--Android tablets, the Chartbook S, the SkyPad 2, the ifly 700...before I realized nothing is as smooth and easy to use as an iPad with Foreflight.

I also realized my Lancair 360 is fast enough to need a lot of pubs...and I don't have much room under max gross weight, so I needed a reliable electronic flight bag.

I fly with two iPads (and for what it's worth have never stepped to the spare), the primary running both Foreflight and Wing X Pro.  Foreflight is a smoother, more polished solution--but its features are better for the flight planning phase.  Wing X has some incredibly useful in-flight features, like color-coded terrain and side-by-side maps (I keep an IFR low next to a sectional with terrain).  I usually keep them both running and toggle between the two to find what I'm interested in.  The spare iPad only has Foreflight on it to save on subscription costs.  I think I'm spending in the neighborhood of $350/year on pubs--not too bad considering the iPad has been one of the biggest boosts in SA that I've encountered.

I've transitioned almost completely to the EFB concept; my checklist, in flight guide, pilot logbook, maintenance logs and performance calculators are all on the iPad.  (I use Dropbox and Logbook Pro).

As for redundancy, I think having two iPads, one of which has two separate programs/databases, is good enough for my purposes.  If I really lose everything, I'll most likely be flying day/VMC anyway...and the increased SA and ease of looking ahead provided by the EFB will probably mean my navaids are leapfrogged way forward.

Hope this helps;

Louis
