Angier:
At my FAA inspection I had 3" black numbers
which the inspector showed me were inappropriate for a 180 kt cruising
airplane. I knew this but did not want to put 12” numbers on the narrow
waisted LNC2. So I proposed 4” letters which fit my stripe.
The inspector said write me a request for exception and I’ll see if I can
get it approved. I did, the request was approved, and I have an FAA
letter to prove it. Size is the only requirement they are concerned about.
Unless, you are obviously trying to hide your numbers with something like a
very light gray on a white fuselage I don’t believe anyone will say
anything.

Subject: [LML] Re: N Numbers
FAR 45.23, 25, 27 & 29 seem to cover all aspects of size and
location of
marks, etc.
But I can't find any reference requiring a particular color contrast
between
the airframe color and the mark color. Do the N Numbers need to be
visible/distinguishable from a certain minimum distance? Black marks on
a
white airframe might be most visible from a distance compared to light
cream
colored marks on a white airframe.
I plan to have pretty basic contrasting N Numbers on 4ZQ for the
inspection
but what about down the road when I get a bit more creative? I wonder
if any
color combinations have actually been rejected by FAA.
