Hi Phil,
I don't know if you overheard Wednesday when we met
at Scott's hangar but he brought up an interesting point, nobody seems to know
if the CG range published by Lancair is for the 0º flap setting or the reflex
setting. The performance that I have seen seems to indicate the CG is for
the 0º setting.
The reflex setting wants a CG further forward than
the 0º setting. If the CG is too far back from the center of lift, you end up
with zero or negative pitch stability and will be porpoiseing down the airways
unless you are always on the elevator. The longer engine mount will help keep
the CG forward. But when you setup for landing flaps, you may have too much
forward CG and that's where the larger horizontal tail comes in.

Subject: Long mount / short tail
I
know the big tail / small tail is hotly debated, but I currently have a long
engine mount and a small tail 360 kit. I am not going to upgrade to the large
tail if I can fly this aircraft in the long mount / short tail
configuration.
Is
any on this list flying a small tail and a long engine mount with a 360
engine? If so, can you tell me about your flight characteristics? Has anyone
also flown the small tail / short mount and can provide some
comparisons?
Thank
you,
Phil
