To all who are building WITHOUT the header tank and faced with this
mismatch here's how I'm handling this future problem.

I am bonding the forward deck to the canopy frame.  This one piece unit
will then be cut so as to give a radius to the left/right front corners of
the deck.  The remaining deck will be strengthened from front to back to
the original intended hinge attach point of the canopy.  The original
forward opening hinges will be used and their pivot points will be bolted
to the aft side of the firewall near the top.

The forward deck remaining, aft of the firewall at the top, is only about 2
1/2 inches long.  This 2 1/2 inches is about all that has to be filled and
part of that fill will consist of the rain gutter bids and the
strengthening of the cut edge of the deck.  The left/right radii for the
forward deck will trail aft and down into the longeron.

There are many more advantages to this approach than just the cowl/forward
deck matching solution.  The obvious and biggest advantage is ... with the
canopy open to it's normal open position, everything forward of the control
sticks and aft of the firewall, is visually available to check, repair, or
to change out ... standing up alongside.  You can top up the hyd fluid,
electrical and work over master cylinders.  You can work on all of the guts
of the airplane forward of the sticks and behind the firewall.

The smaller forward portion of the forward deck, is permanently bonded to
the top of the firewall. The full length of the forward deck, resting on
top of the longerons, is bonded to the longerons permanently.  This will
stiffen those joints more and make everything free of leaks from rain and
ram air.
