Byron: A simple and very cheap method is to cut a strip of thin cardboard or
something similar so that it fits around the hub with about an inch or two
of overlap. The strip needs to be just wide enough to fit under the tube and
bridge the gap as you bring the hub halves together. Of course, it'll have
to remain as you tighten the bolts but I've done this for several tire
changes (when the airplane was new, I tended to brake a bit too much
resulting in several flat-spotted tires) with no adverse effects. The strip
should be just wide enough to cover the gap without riding up the sides of
the hub.
