It's not about proving where you have residences. For example. Lets say you wanted to say you lived in Oregon to avoid Sales Taxes and you can provide proof. But you really spend all your time in California.  While you may be able to provide proof and its all legitimate proof that you do live in Oregon..... what they will look at (if audited)  is can you prove you didn't spend more time in California than oregon. And that is hard to do. Because of your Work location, Cellphone bill etc. etc.
You can approach this 2 ways:
1) the way that you wont get audited or ever have to prove it
2) be able to prove that you do infact have established residence in oregon and you don't spend more time in the other 2 states you have houses in that HAVE sales tax then in Oregon.

I just had this conversation with some people who know this topic.

What lucky state has no sales tax?
The states discover that you have purchased a plane off of the FAA
registration application.  You will probably have both states that have
taxes trying to soak you if they identify that you live in their state.

If I looked your pilot license up on the FAA records, where would you live?

I bet you need a lawyer!

Of course, if you have three residences, maybe it is not such a big problem
after all..  :>)

Can anybody tell me if one must provide proof of residence when purchasing &
registering an aircraft?  Here's the deal.  I have residences in three
states.  One of those has no sales tax.  I'm buying an airplane and want to
have it registered in the "no sales tax" state but none of my ID
demonstrates I live there.  Any pointers would be welcome.

Danny
