Thanks, Scott.  Your comments reinforce what I have guessed.  I found something called "Rescue Tape" in the Aircraft Spruce catalog, part #01-00990.  Is that what you used to cover the hoses?

George,

I don't know if it is a concern, but here goes.  The black outer coating seems to be not much more than a cosmetic protective coating.  Where mine have "cracked", I have wrapped the area with silicon self sealing tape to retain any of its protective nature.

If I ever have to replace these hoses, I will not seek replacement material but I will use some like Sacremento Sky Ranch to build a replacement set.

BTW, I did make all my fluid hoses back in the day..... Flying with them since 1996.

Very timely, for me, are recent postings regarding hydraulic hoses.

After 16 years, the outer rubber coating on my hoses is starting to crack and, on many of my hoses, is actually breaking off, revealing the white woven material.  I have been watching this occur with some concern.

The question is: Is this an immediate safety concern?  Is there increased chances of a hose failure, and if so, how big a concern is it.  In other words, should the airplane be immediately grounded until I fabricate new hoses?

These questions are for an experienced hydraulics person, and not for emotional speculation by those seeking perfection.
