Yes, I did exactly that. I drilled a small hole in the firewall and used a short piece of Nylaflow epoxied in to feed the hinge pin in to the hinge hole. It has worked well, and is easy to insert or remove, provided you get the hinge halves properly aligned first - ask me how I know.
