Ok, so tell me, since I understand the DC9 is flown by actuating the trim tabs for the ailerons and elevator and not the control surfaces themselves, why are the forces so high ?

Which DC-9 are you flying?  I've got thousands of hours in the 80 series and the stick forces are anything but light. It's easily the heaviest "feeling" airliner that I've flown.
