Jay: Here is what I was told by the builder and previous owner of my Legacy. I follow those instructions today and my level currently sits at 7 on the stick.
> I believe it is important to do an oil sample at every oil change along
> with the filter change to inspect the filter. The sample should be taken
> after the engine oil has been warmed up. I put in 8 quarts. Then I let
> it settle to the 7 quart mark after a few hours of flight. I added 1/2
> quart at a time when the oil is just below 7 quart mark (cold engine,
> warm it will read higher), so I never ran it above 7 1/2 quarts. I
> believe the engine is certified to run at 4 quarts, but I have never run
> it below 6 1/2 quarts.
Additionally, I have the breather on top of the exhaust and there is some oil that always finds the belly but that is a good reason to get under once in a while and take a look. The belly and oil have not been noticeable with drips on the floor or anything.
