Jay: Here is what I was told by the builder and previous owner of my Legacy.  I follow those instructions today and my level currently sits at 7 on the stick.

Additionally, I have the breather on top of the exhaust and there is some oil that always finds the belly but that is a good reason to get under once in a while and take a look.  The belly and oil have not been noticeable with drips on the floor or anything.
