Hello Michael.
Yep, the manual does not reveal much about the
baggage compartment, this is pretty much left to your imagination.
Things do not get better for those who chose the
outbackgear, the OB supplement only covers things directly concerning the gear
& flaps. Nuthin at all about the rest.............
I dropped by the airfield this morning and took a
couple of photos of the torque tube holes. As you can see, there is a nice
little barrier that oughta keep them sharks outa the cabin. Sorry about the dirt
on that brand new buffed paintjob; the hangarbirds obviously do not know what
kind of marvel they shit on! I´d better come back with plenty water and some
kind of cover. Correction: I WILL come back with plenty water and an air
rifle.
I built two compartments inside the baggage area,
one each side. The left side will house the LH fuel pumps (two in series, one
ppav computer driven and one manual backup) and the gear motor, relays and
probably a common ground bus bar for everything.
The right compartment will house the RH
fuel pumps and the strobe pwr unit.
I remembered to install hardpoints and studs for
everything prior to glassing the compartments in!
I have, of course, made fairly large access panels
in the seatback.
I will happily go back to the airfield and
take more photos, no problem at all.
I am in the paint-process at the moment. - and I am
slowly getting bored! I trailered the fuselage and all other parts to an auto
paintshop, but little happened by itself. I primed, filled wet sanded, primed,
wet sanded, and filled some more myself. Then the painter mixed up some white
base color and sprayed it on.
I then wet sanded the fuselage again and masked
everything up. The painter sprayed on the blue base color. I then removed all
masking and fixed all minor problems, then the painter sprayed two layers of
clear. I then wet sanded everything and flattened the color changes. Then the
painter sprayed two good layers of clear and I wet sanded, wet sanded, buffed,
buffed, buffed, made various small repairs, wet sanded and buffed again and
applied some wax.
As a reward for all that work, I still need to
paint, wet sand and buff all the other parts!
I picked up everything, trailered the fuselage to
the airfield so i have room in my workshop and will paint the rest at
home. I seriously look forward to the day this job is done
with! 500 hrs. is not a bad guess for the
paintjob.
I will send you some photos of that baggage area
within the next couple of days. Hmmm, maybe I should post this mesage on the
list, someone else might be interested.
Very best regards
Tim Jorgensen

Dear Tim:
We are not acquainted, but wanted to send thanks
for addressing this issue. I am working up to finishig this area (of my
plane). You have solved the question of closing.
Thanks for your timely input.
While scavaging photos from the internet, of finished
Lancair's or those under construction, seldom is found pics of the "baggage
area", especially ones of "under the floor, shananigans." If you
have p[hotos of yours, and would share, I'd be in your debt.
Rudder was closed yesterday. Seat-back going in
today. Hope to be flying by Christmas 2009, 10, 11
.....................
