I'm making plans to come.  Don't know if I can make both days.  I'll try to keep in touch.  Want me to bring anything?  (I'll be flying N4XE, an air conditioned LIV-P, TSIO-550 and I'll bring a small tool box.)

Subject: LOBO Condition Inspection Workshop, 6-7 June

Dear LOBO Members,

LOBO will sponsor a Condition Inspection Workshop in the EAA Chapter 186 hangar/clubhouse at Manassas, VA (KHEF) on 6-7 June, 2009. Manassas airport is located 24 nm west of Washington DC. It is in the Washington Special Flight Rules Area and requires adherence to published procedures to enter or exit. The procedures are easy and shouldn’t discourage anyone from attending. Information on the entry/exit procedure is available at:   http://www.aopa.org/adiz/adiz.html. The AOPA site also includes a link to the FAA online course that you’ll need to complete prior to flying within 60 NM of the DCA VOR (Washington Reagan National Airport). Bob Pastusek (757-286-4802-cell) and Bill Harrelson (540-372-8738)  are very familiar with the procedures and will be happy to answer any questions.

This two-day event will start at 9 AM each day and continue to 5 PM, with a no-host lunch at Hoppy’s restaurant (Volo Aviation) at the airport each day. There will likely be cof fee and donuts for anyone arriving early. Park in the lot behind the tower on the west side of the airfield if driving; park at the base of the tower if flying in. There are no aircraft tie-downs at the base of the tower, so please bring chocks with you. If staying overnight, we’ll arrange to tie your aircraft down near the clubhouse, and will have limited transportation available. If this “trial” event is successful, LOBO hopes to schedule similar events wherever we can find volunteers willing to sponsor them.

The workshop will be focused on the annual condition inspection needs of Lancair composite aircraft, but is open to all LOBO members, EAA Chapter members and invited guests. The first day will focus on engine and related systems, and day two will focus on composite airframes and airframe components. We plan to use Bob Pastusek’s IV-P—due its first condition inspection—as the “inspection sample,” and to have Bill Harrelson’s 320 and Doug Brunner’s Legacy available for reference to inspection issues with these types.

We also expect to have local A&P’s Bobbi Boucher and Phil McLanahan on hand to assist and keep us honest. Both have extensive experience with homebuilding and general aviation aircraft maintenance, and we are very fortunate to have their talent and expertise available for this event.
We considered trying to conduct inspections on one of each type Lancair, but became concerned about getting all the right parts back on each respective model when we were done… Actually, time, space and common sense dictate that we start this off a bit more conservatively until we can develop agenda and procedures for these events. To that end, Bob and Bill are collecting information on issues that have shown up over the years, and would most sincerely appreciate any checklists, AD’s, deficiency reports, or similar things that apply to any model of Lancair aircraft that you can provide, preferably in electronic form. We will consolidate and post material provided to the LOBO web site (http://www.lancairowners.com ), and will reproduce all appropriate material as handouts for this workshop. We also welcome any “advance” questions so we can research and include answers as part of this workshop.

Based on interest, we plan to have the capability conduct pitot/static, altimeter and transponder system tests, as well as dynamic prop balancing—on a paid basis (cost dependent upon # signed up, but less than the local going rate)—on Saturday. To date, I have only one person interested in prop balancing; none for pitot static checks. We’ll offer these if we have a minimum of three—for either—s o let me know ASAP of your interest in these. To permit planning for handouts, refreshments and system checks, please advise me by email (rpastusek@htii.com) or phone (703-271-8008—leave a message) of your intention to attend; whether you will be flying in or driving; and your desire to use any of the above paid services. The deadline for advising of your attendance will be 1 June.

Although this event is planned and sponsored by LOBO, the use of EAA 186’s great facility for this event dictated that we open it to other EAA members, so encourage your non-LOBO friends to come with you…and to join LOBO.

Bill and I look forward to seeing you the first weekend in June. Mark your calendar now, and be sure to send me an RSVP!

PS: This is essentially a duplication of the article that will appear in the LOBO newsletter later this month, but I thought you should have as much notification as possible. Don’t forget to email or call if you’re coming!
