Okay, guys, thanks.  It's unanimous that fiberglass upholstery backing is just a waste of time and money (certainly for the flat places).  I guess it's time to cruise the auto upholstery shops and start learning.

Randy, the reason I can't glue to the consoles is that I just put an access panel in there to reach the bracket with attaches the autopilot pushrod to the pitch pushrod.  I'll remove the cover at each annual.  I'd rather cover it up than have a separately upholstered access panel.  Up until last weekend, however, your idea would have been perfect.  And I certainly can't argue with your results, which look perfect as well.
