Randy,
The vernatherm can be tested in water. It
should start extending at about 140* F and reach full extension of 0.25" at
180*. This information from Lycoming engineer. FYI, I did have a new
one that did not meet those spec's and I exchanged for another that did fully
extend. Check the surface of your existing vernatherm, you
should see a complete "ring" where it has been seating. There is a tool,
(which I've not used), for dressing the seat.
