I installed mine after painting too. Start with really clean, degreased surfaces. Lay the seal in-place. Get the feel for fit; i.e. you don't want to stretch or cut the corners so that at the end you have a hump of seal. Use what you would consider too little RTV and use a syringe. You want to avoid squeeze out. After the RTV is cured your can go back and add more RTV in the areas that need it, just by gently pulling the seal sufficient to insert the syringe. There is so much surface area and the RTV is sufficiently strong and the stress is always under compression, that minimal RTV will be best.
