OK, so much for IV's.
Be advised that 320/360's have no problem if you can hold a line. I
have flown from and onto patchy ice, packed snow and other
unfriendly surfaces - with the least of problems as long as there is no
extreme x-wind. Of course, I have chosen long runways and require
little braking from our grocery cart wheels. Just let the thing roll
out - if there is snow, it provides adequate braking all by itself.
Landing speed is no different than on dry pavement as long as there is
sufficient length. I don't like braking so I know the roll
out distance for a dry runway at a certain landing speed without braking
- it is the same or less for packed snow or even ice if the line can be
maintained.
A frozen Grayhawk in NE Illinois. If only I could get my 320
over the ice lump in front of the hangar - the perf is great.

Having
done lots of packed snow landings in my 210, I decided to give it a try in the
IV. With no nose gear steering and relying totally on differential
braking, I didn’t actually make it too far from the hangar before aborting my
ill thought out mission. (have you seen the weather in Seattle this
weekend?!?)
I wouldn’t recommend anyone land a IV on packed snow.
In fact, I wouldn’t recommend even taxiing, much less taking off and
landing.

On thin snow cover (less than an inch) with a cross
wind lost directional control and nearly departed runway before going
around. Have handled this before in Bonanza and C182 but they have nosewheel
steering and lower landing speeds.

yep, and its not
good. I avoid snow on the runway due to high tire pressure and no nose wheel
steering. Others my have different opinions.

Anybody have experience in IVs, landing/taking off
from runways with compact snow and
ice?
