Larry,
Yes, I
have had carb ice in my Lancair 320 with a Lycoming O-320-E2D. I do have
carb heat and it did, after awhile, remove the carb ice. OAT at the time
was upper 30's with some visible moisture during flight. First hint of
carb ice during cruise was an imbalance of my EGTs followed by a very slow
drop in manifold pressure and finally some engine roughness. With 1300
hours on the aircraft, I have encountered carb ice twice (that I know of), once
while IFR on top, the other while VFR. All encounters were during the
winter months in the southeast U.S.

Guys,
I've got a friend
looking at his 320 carb heat intake box. The question is; Does lower
cowl air have enough heat in it to prevent carb ice? He is considering
muffing an exhaust pipe to make sure the heated air is adequately hot.
I was wondering if
others have ever had carb ice with the standard Lancair carb heat box (using
just lower cowl hot (warm) air)?
We'd appreciate
your thoughts.
Larry
