180 hp Lyc. new.  450hrs blew hole in coil on left mag at 10.5k over mountains.

At 700 hrs had left mag go bad on approach McCall Id. another high flight. Carbon arching was given as cause.
At 710hrs the right mag failed on run-up.  Nice to do it on the ground for a change.  Same cause arching.

These where slicks.

Do the slick recommended complete replacement of at least major check up at 500hrs.

I have flown my Slick 4300 mags for 1,500 hours and have had no  problems. At 900 hours I had the points and condensor changed. At  1,450 I had the points changed again. No problems to date.

First of all, thanks John Halle and Tom Gourley for your recent post  on the potential problems with the Slick/Unison 6310 mags. Very  informative and insightful.
