Bill,
Perhaps the broad brush I used was off the mark. I liked your ending
statement most of all, "You learn what you need and retain what you use."
That
statement is precisely the point of the builder doing the majority of the
work
and receiving his annual inspection authorization. How can any A&P know
that
custom airplane better than the builder after he has spent years learning
those things necessary to build a certified "experimental, amateur built"
aircraft?
Maybe it would be useful to hear from those LMLers that bought a pre-built
Lancair (possibly pre-used, too) and how they found an A&P to sign off the
annual condition inspection or work on the craft.

PS The electrics you mentioned were used in designs from the middle of the
last century.
